The Gujarat government is building the tallest sitting statue of Buddha in the world at Dev ni Mori near Shamlaji, 150 kms north of Ahmedabad, says reports.

According to report, the 108 meter tall statue will be the second tallest in the world after the 153 meter Spring Temple in China and tallest after 92-meter statue in Thailand. The statue will have Buddha covered by a seven-hooded Mucalinda, the mythological serpent who provided shelter when Buddha was in meditation.

The 700 crore project was presented at recently held International Buddhist Conference, which saw delegates from 26 nations. The project was said to be Modi's cherished projects while he was Gujarat CM.

Quoting Anil Patel, secretary of Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board (GPYVB), report said that an architect firm has been finalised and the project work is expected to begin in year's time.
