Exactly two weeks after a stampede killed 23 people on the foot overbridge at Elphinstone Road station, a few commuters had another close shave on Friday afternoon when a small portion of the ceiling near the ticket booking counter collapsed, injuring a woman.

According to Rohan Basak, son of the injured woman, Anita, they were headed for Chembur via Dadar and Kurla. "My mother had to gone to the Passport office. We met at Worli and took a bus to Elphinstone Rd to take a train back home. As she entered the station premises, a portion of the ceiling fell on her. She was immediately shifted to KEM hospital," Basak said, adding his mother was not in a condition to speak. The incident happened around 3.45 pm next to the ticket booking office on the ROB of Elpinstone station from where people get to the ticket counter.

Basak entered the station from the entrance on the road overbridge (ROB) at Elphinstone Road.

Sources said granite slabs had fallen off earlier as well.

"Anita has two stitches on her head. It was a minor incident," said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway.

"She has suffered minor injuries and hence did not require to be admitted. We treated her at our out-patient department," said Avinash Supe, Dean of KEM Hospital.

The latest incident comes at a time when the Western Railway is in the midst of submitting audit report about improvements needed at suburban railway stations. After the stampede, the railways had come under heavy criticism for the delay in constructing a new FOB. The Railway Board has already called for an inquiry over the 18-month delay in constructing the new Rs 11.38 crore ROB despite getting clearance in the budget. This committee will look into the factors behind the delay.

A report on Elphinstone Road stampede, submitted by a five-member team headed by Chief Safety Officer SK Singla recently, has absolved the railway officials of the guilt for the incident.
