In yet another shocking crime in Uttar Pradesh, a 35-year-old woman was gang-raped and burnt alive inside a temple by five men in Sambhal district on Friday. The victim, a mother of two children, had called up the police on Dial 100 minutes after she was gang-raped but her distress call was left unanswered by the men on duty, her husband claimed.

According to her husband, who works as a labour in Ghaziabad, five men had barged into his house at around 2.30 am on Friday when she and his two children were sleeping. "They took turns to rape my wife. They are the same men who were harassing my wife for the past few months whenever I was away from from home," he told the police.

“She tried calling me and my brother after they raped her but could not reach. She then called her cousin and narrated her ordeal. Before her cousin could inform the police, the same men barged in again and dragged her to a nearby temple. They threw her in temple’s yagyashala and poured kerosene to burn her alive,” he told the police.

On his information, the police recovered the burnt body from the temple’s yagyashala. They also found the victim’s mobile and secured her call details and recording of the last call in which she had named the five accused who had gangraped her.

SHO Rajpura Police Station Arun Kumar said that on the basis of the call recording the accused have been identified as Gullu, Kumar Pal, Mahaveer, Aram Singh and Charan Singh. A case under Sections 302, 376D, 201, 147, 148 and 149 has been registered against the five accused for gang-rape and murder.

“They belong to the same village and are on the run after committing the crime. We have formed police teams to nab them,” said the SHO. Three persons have been detained by the police for questioning. The police have recorded the statements of the victim’s husband and cousin.

The SHO claimed that the victim’s mobile and call recording have provided vital clues in identifying the accused.

“Her last call recording is a vital piece of evidence which will used against the accused to get them booked,” said the SHO. The body has been sent for post mortem and the police are awaiting the post mortem report to confirm the gang-rape to proceed in the case further.

Prem Prakash, the ADG Bareilly Zone, said that the police will also verify and probe her husband’s claim that the victim had made a call on Dial 100 but no one answered her distress call. Action will be initiated against the guilty after the probe, said the ADG.
