According to sources, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has approved Malhotra's name as AICS chief on the condition that he would resign as president of the suspended Archery Association of India (AAI).
Former Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president and veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra is likely to be appointed as chairman of the defunct All India Council of Sports (AICS), which is set to be revived.
According to sources, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has approved Malhotra's name as AICS chief on the condition that he would resign as president of the suspended Archery Association of India (AAI).
Malhotra's appointment will pave the way for AAI's return as the sports ministry had, in December 2012, suspended the Malhotra-led body after it violated the age and tenure restrictions prescribed in the Sports Code. Malhotra has served more than three consecutive terms as AAI president and is above 70 years.
It is learnt that Malhotra has already forwarded his resignation to AAI's executive committee. The committee has not yet accepted it as it is waiting for the formal announcement of Malhotra's name for AICS by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Malhotra neither confirmed nor denied the development.
"The government has already issued a gazette notification to constitute the AICS. The body would soon become functional. I can't say much on this topic as I am yet to hear from the PMO," Malhotra said.
Malhotra was AICS chairman during NDA's regime in 2003 with a Cabinet rank. The AICS became dysfunctional after the fall of the BJP-led government at the centre.
This time, Malhotra has to make do with the state minister's rank since sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal is of the same portfolio with independent charge.
The AICS will include four Members of Parliament, sports personalities, coaches, experts, administrators, director generals of Sports Authority of India and National Anti-Doping Agency. It will also comprise the vice chancellor of Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, officials of sports ministry, representatives from National Sports Federations, IOA, corporate bodies and NGOs.
"There AICS will be an advisory body to the ministry and it will work for the promotion and development of sports in the country," an official said.
