The BJP appears to be amplifying its Hindutva pitch as the Uttar Pradesh elections get closer. A day after the party promised a white paper on the “exodus” from Kairana, it petitioned the poll panel asking it to ensure the security of the migrants in seven districts of western UP so that they can return to their constituency to vote.

In a letter to the Election Commission on Sunday, the BJP said that the responsibility of ensuring that people belonging to the districts of Shamli (Kairana), Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Meerut, Rampur, Sahranpur and Amroha, “who had left their homes because of an atmosphere of fear” get their right to franchise. All the eight districts have a considerable Muslim population.

Over the past ten days, the party has made a series of moves to highlight Kairana, where it had alleged last year that Hindu families had left their homes after criminals belonging to a particular community extorted money from them. Pointing out that the Election Commission itself has marked the sensitive and extra sensitive areas, it said peaceful and non-partisan polling was possible at these places only if sufficient paramilitary and security personnel were deployed.

That the BJP is pulling out all the stops in the UP battle was apparent from its manifesto, which was a blend of development and contentious issues like Ram Mandir and Kairana. Hoping to get an edge from its core agenda, that could have the potential of polarisation, the BJP has promised a special department in each district and a deputy collector to stop “exodus due to communal tension”.
