Noting that a there was a revenue deficit of Rs 4,350 crore after AAP stepped down last year, and attributing it to excessive raids by tax inspectors, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said that the Finance Minister Manish Sisodia has instructed VAT commissioner to immediately stop unnecessary raids on traders.
"While we were in the government, there was a record collection of revenue. After our government stepped down last year, there was a decline of Rs 4,350 crore. Why was this? During the last 8-9 months when the BJP was controlling the Delhi administration, there were many raids on the traders. The Finance Minister had a meeting with the VAT commissioner and asked him to stop unncessary raids on businessmen who are not in the defaulters list," Kejriwal told the House.
"The traders need to be given confidence that if they pay us money, it will be utilised to the fullest and their children will get good education and quality life. Plus, they should feel that they are not hounded and they can conduct their business without any harrasment," he added.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisioda said it was the responsibilty of the tax payers to develop a confidence saying their "one paisa will become one and half paisa if goes to the government".
Lt Governor Najeeb Jung in his address to the first session of Sixth Legislative Assembly of Delhi said the new government will also put an end to 'inspector raj' and discourage raids on traders and create a new bond of trust between them and the government.
"Historically, Delhi has been a city of flourishing trade and my government is committed to making it a trade and retail hub once again by creating a friendly tax environment for traders. The government is firm on its commitment to insulate Delhi's traders from the inspector raj.
"We want to create a policy framework where every businessman and businesswoman in the country would like to come to Delhi to establish new enterprises," Jung said.
