Terror revisited Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday when two heavily armed militants attacked the Border Security Force (BSF) convoy killing two jawans and injuring 11 others at Samroli on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Udhampur district. A Pakistani militant was later gunned down in retaliatory action while another managed to flee from the spot before being captured alive by local residents. The Udhampur terror attack has an eerie similarity to the attack on the Dinanagar police station in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. The attack was carried out just nine days after the newly-infiltrated group of militants launched a fidayeen attack in Dinanagar.

Inspector general of BSF, Jammu frontier, Rakesh Sharma, said militants attacked the BSF convoy at around 7.30am when it was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu.

"Two of our jawans were martyred and 11 others were injured. However, our jawans fired at the militants who attacked the bus. One of them was killed and another fled towards mountains. He was later caught," he said.

The injured BSF jawans were shifted to a hospital where condition of some is said to be serious. Reinforcements were rushed to the area and a massive search operation was launched by the security forces. Panic gripped the area and traffic on the highway was halted as a precautionary measure.

"They might have jumped into the truck which was coming from Jammu. The truck is there and the driver has given all the leads," Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary, district development commissioner Udhampur, told dna.

The attack on the BSF convoy happened almost one hour after Amarnath yatra convoy passed through the area for the holy cave. "The Ämarnath convoy passed through the area at 6.30am. The attack happened 45 minutes after some rumours were being spread online that the attack was on the Amarnath yatris' convoy," said Shahid.

Police said the captured militant identified as Usman aka Naveed of Faisalabad in Pakistan tried to flee through the mountains but was unable to navigate. He took five hostages along and asked them to show the way. However three got detached and two were commandeered before they overpowered him and handed him over to the security forces.

Shot down terrorist has been identified as Tariq Mir Zahid

It is not the first time that any Pakistani militant was captured alive in Jammu and Kashmir. There have been several instances when foreign militants were arrested alive.

Mohammed Zubair alias Talha Zarar of Multan in Pakistan was arrested in March 2013 in connection with the attack on the J&K Police Public School in Bemina that left five CRPF jawans dead and 10 others injured.

Waheed Noor Khan, a Pakistani militant of Lashkar-e-Tioba, was arrested in 2010 from Sopore. He was killed in a mysterious blast in June this year when he was being taken to Srinagar after attending court hearing in Sopore.

The attack also comes just days before national security advisors of India and Pakistan are planning to meet to discuss all issues relating to terror and borders. Government sources said the matter will be broached by New Delhi during NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan along with the Dinanagar terror incident in which three terrorists were killed by the Punjab SWAT team after an 11-hour gunfight.
