Day after Supreme Court's landmark Triple Talaq judgment, Ishrat Jahan became a household name.

The Triple Talaq petitioner from West Bengal became a household name after media took up her case.

But now for the first time, Ishrat Jahan's husband has come forward and tried to explain his side of of the story.

Breaking his silence, Murtaja Ansari said that he never divorced Ishrat Jahan and that he wanted her to return home.

Talking to DNA in Kolkata, Ansari said the media had played up Ishrat’s story making her look like a “victim” while no one bothered to check his side of the story.

“We got married in 2001. We have four kids. After 14 years of marriage why will I divorce her,” he asked.

According to Ansari, the main reason behind the difference between him and his wife was the place where they would stay.

“I wanted her to stay with me at our village in Aurangabad, Bihar where we have a comfortable house. My home here in Howrah (West Bengal) comprises only one room and is not enough for us,” Ansari said.

He also alleged that Ishrat wanted to stay in Kolkata for one of her male friends.

“While I was working in Dubai, her male friend used to visit here often and I have a feeling they have had an affair,” Ansari claimed.

“This is another reason why I want her to come over to Bihar where she can live with my other family members but she did not come,” Ansari said.

He also claimed that it was his eldest daughter who told him about Ishrat's male friend.

“In spite of everything, I want her back as I still love her. I think it is her adamant nature and some external persuasion is holding her back,” Ansari insisted.

When asked about his second marriage, Ansari said he remarried for the sake of his children.

“I consulted the local religious leader and upon his suggestion went ahead with my second marriage.”

On August 31, Ishrat Jahan had filed a complaint of her missing children who were later found out to have been taken away by Ansari.

“I thought they were missing out on their studies and so I wanted to take them away but she filed a missing complaint against me. Officers called my brother enquiring about the kids. My brother in turn, called me up and I immediately returned the kids at the PS,” Ansari said.

In Kolkata to attend a hearing at the Children Welfare Committee, Ansari produced school documents of all the four children to prove that they had been living with him in Bihar.

A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said that it would be preferred if both Isharat and her husband can resolve the matter amicably.

On September 5, Ishrat had told DNA that since the Supreme Court ruling on August 22 turning down the practice of instant triple talaq, her life had got bad to worse as she was socially ostracised and was subject to a lot of economic, social and mental insecurity.

Asked if she wanted to return to her husband, Ishrat told DNA, “I have not thought about it at the moment. Even if I do, does he expect me to sleep with him on the same bed along with his second wife?”
