Swine flu has claimed the lives of 2,335 people across the country till April 21 and although World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the pandemic to be over, it has said that the virus would continue to circulate as seasonal influenza, Government told the Rajya Sabha said.

"While declaring the pandemic to be over, WHO conveyed that the pandemic influenza A H1N1 virus would continue to circulate as seasonal influenza virus causing sporadic cases and outbreaks of various intensities," Health Minister J P Nadda said. He said that from July 2014 to April 21, 2015, there have been 2,335 deaths of laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1).

The Health Minister said that all the deaths may not have occurred only due to the Influenza A H1N1 infection but may also be due to co-morbid conditions (lung, liver, kidney disease, blood disorders, diabetes etc) and because of compromised immunity of patients.

Replying to another question, he said that from January 1 this year to April 21, 2,223 people had died with Maharashtra registering the highest deaths of 485. Nadda said his Ministry has already procured 3,60,000 capsules of Oseltamivir, 10,000 N-95 masks, 10,000 diagnostic kits from which the requirement of the states have been met and these figures were over the stock maintained by the state governments.  Centre has remained in regular touch with state governments and they have also been provided guidelines on screening, risk categorisation of patients, clinical case management and ventilator management.
