Swine Flu: AMU student succumbs to death

With the death of a college girl due to swine flu, all classes at JN Medical College under Aligarh Muslim University have been suspended till February 18, university spokesperson said on Saturday. Rushda Pervez, a student of final year graduation course in Geography died on Friday, he said.

With the death of a college girl due to swine flu, all classes at JN Medical College under Aligarh Muslim University have been suspended till February 18, university spokesperson said on Saturday. Rushda Pervez, a student of final year graduation course in Geography died on Friday, he said.

She, along with 185 other girls, had gone for an educational tour to South India last week, he said.

On her return, she developed some swine flu symptoms and was treated at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital, AMU. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences but succumbed to her illness before she could reach New Delhi last evening, the spokesperson said.

Seven other girls who were with her and have showed flu-like symptoms. They have been admitted at the University Health Service as a precautionary measure.

The University has also issued a notification that as a precautionary measure, all educational tours and field trips have been cancelled till further date, the spokesperson said.

"There is no need for any panic and all girl inmates of Women's College hostels are being properly screened and provided necessary medical checkup. There is no evidence of any threat of outbreak of this disease", he added.
The college Principal, Tariq Mansoor said that a special isolation ward has been established at the Medical College Hospital and as a precautionary step, 37 doctors who have been treating swine flu patients are being administered preventive medicines.

Other precautionary measures including masks for all medical staff attending suspected cases are also been taken, he said.
