After keeping minority at bay in the last two years in search of Hindu votes, the Congress has finally returned to its basics. In a grand convention organised for the party's minority wing, an aggressive Rahul Gandhi stepped up his attack on PM Narendra Modi by several notches and dared him to a conversation on national security and the Rafale fighter jet deal. In the same meeting, Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev promised to withdraw the triple talaq law.

"I dare Narendra Modi to speak to me for 5 or 10 minutes on the national security of our country or on the Rafale deal; he's a coward and will run away," said a combative Gandhi.

Gandhi said that the country stands for its minorities and that there should be no caste, religion or linguistic discrimination. "If you speak of education of the country, then you cannot ignore Maulana Azad. If you speak of the space programme, you cannot ignore Vikram Sarabhai. If you speak of While Revolution, then you cannot ignore (Verghese) Kurien. And, if you speak of liberalisation, you cannot ignore Manmohan Singh," said Gandhi.

He said that in Madhya Pradesh, his party will ensure that RSS workers, hired by the previous government, will be shown the door. "(CM) Kamal Nath ji told me that the RSS was given over Rs 800 crore by the BJP government. A special ministry was formed for the RSS people and they ran the state," said Gandhi.

He also warned the bureaucracy. "The bureaucracy should know that they work for the Indian people and not for the RSS," he said, sending a warning signal.

Earlier, Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev promise to repeal the triple talaq law. "I promise you that Congress will form the government in 2019 and we will repeal this triple talaq law. Many people told us that this law is for the empowerment of Muslim women but we opposed it because it is a weapon used by BJP against Muslim men so that they could be harassed by the police," she said.
