A highly decorated army soldier from South Kashmir, whose name was enough to send shivers down the terrorists' spine, lost the battle for his life after taking on heavily armed terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba in Batagund area of Kapran in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Sunday.

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was carrying out the search of a house when he came across the hiding terrorists.

In the ensuing gunfight, he suffered grievous injuries and was evacuated to 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar. However, he later succumbed to his injuries. Six heavily armed terrorists of Hizbul Mujahedeen and Lashkar-e-Tioba were eliminated in the operation.

Hailing from Kulgam, the 38-year-old Wani had been at the forefront of the anti-terror operations in his 14 year career. In his one-and-half-decade long carreer, he was awarded Sena Medal twice for displaying indomitable courage while taking on the terrorists in the Kashmir valley.

His first Sena Medal for gallantry was in 2007 when he was honoured for taking on the terrorists during  Operation Augam in which four terrorists were eliminated.

On November 14, 2017 he displayed exemplary courage in eliminating a Hizbul terrorist and apprehending two other ultras - one from Lashkar-e-Toiba and another from Hizbul Mujahideen. He was again decorated with Sena Medal for astounding bravery on the occasion of Independence Day next year.

On Monday, his brothers in arms paid an emotional tribute to the fallen hero at a solemn ceremony in Srinagar. Floral tributes were paid to Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani at 15 corps headquarters at Badami Bagh Cantonment. Leading the nation to pay homage was Chinar Corps Commander  Lt Gen AK Bhatt. In a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also joined in to pay their last respects to the martyr.

“The braveheart form Kulgam district was a highly decorated soldier and had been twice awarded Sena Medal for gallantry in August 2007 and August 2018. The 38 years old martyr had joined the Army in 2004. He is survived by his wife and two children”, said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar.

The mortal remains of the martyr were taken for last rites to his native village in Kulgam district. “In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of the martyr and remains committed to their dignity and well being”, said Colonel Kalia.

His body, wrapped in tri-colour, was taken to his native village Ashmuji in Kulgmam and handed over to family members. After the rituals, the body was taken for burial to a nearby graveyard where hundreds of villagers were gathered to bid goodbye. A 21-gun salute was given when Wani's body was lowered in the grave.
