Shiv Sena's Kishori Pednekar elected new Mayor of Mumbai, Suhas Wadkar as Deputy Mayor

They were elected to their posts unopposed since the other parties, i.e. the BJP, Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) did not contest the BMC polls this year.

Shiv Sena corporator Kishori Pednekar was on Friday, i.e. on November 22, formally elected as the 77th mayor of Mumbai, in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. Suhas Wadkar, also from the Shiv Sena, was elected as the deputy mayor.

 

 

Both the leaders of the Shiv Sena, which has the highest number of corporators in the BMC, were elected to their posts unopposed since the other parties, i.e. the BJP, Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) did not contest the BMC polls this year.

Of the total 227 seats in BMC, the Shiv Sena has won 94 corporators, BJP, Congress, and NCP have 83, 29 and eight, respectively. There are 27 municipal bodies, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Aurangabad, where Mayoral elections were held.

Pednekar, while starting her term, said that Mumbaikars should focus on saving water and start travelling by the city's Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses to reduce congestion on roads and to reduce pollution. She said talked about the importance of municipal officials focusing on pothole-free roads.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi started cleanliness campaign. We should also be part of this. We should also clean Mumbai with everyone`s participation," Pednekar told reporters here after being elected.

Other points in her agenda were facilitating better health, education and ensuring clean drinking water to people, in addition to improving civic amenities and keeping the city safe and secure.

Kishori Pednekar has been a three-time corporator for the Shiv Sena from Lower Parel in South Mumbai. She will hold the post of the mayor for two and a half years.
