A resurgence of militancy in poll-bound central and south Kashmir has created a fear psychosis among politicians and the electorate at large in the valley. Such is the fear that the Congress had to cancel the election rallies to be held in Pampore and Pulwama in south Kashmir on Monday.

This follows a series of militant attacks in south and central Kashmir on Sunday. Two local Hizbul Mujhadeen militants were killed when they made an abortive bid to kill three senior police officers at Padgampora village in Pulwama district on Sunday.  Massive crowds poured in to join the last rites of the two militants. In fact, other militants also joined the funeral and offered gun salutes to the slain ultras.

In another incident, two cops were injured when militants attacked the ancestral home of the J&K Minister of State for Haj and Auquaf Syed Farooq Andrabi, before decamping with some rifles at Doorru in Anantnag. Also, heavily armed militants stormed the residence of the assistant jail superintendent (AJS), threatened his family, abducted his son and torched his vehicle at Chadoora in central Kashmir district of Budgam.

“We had raised the issue of ensuring the security of the common people and creating a peaceful atmosphere at all forums before and after the elections were announced. My question is the same: how will voters come out in this scenario? Before declaring the elections, they ought to have ensured the safety and security of the people,” said GA Mir, J&K Congress president, who is contesting the Anantnag parliamentary seat as a joint candidate of the National Conference (NC) and Congress.

The Srinagar and Anantnag parliamentary constituencies of central and south Kashmir are going to polls on April 9 and 12 respectively. More than 250 additional companies of paramilitary forces are being deployed to ensure peaceful polls.

ULTRAS RANSACK COP’S HOUSE

For the second time in the last two days, militants stormed the house of a police officer, fired some rounds and ransacked the property before fleeing from the spot. The police said the militants barged into the house of a police officer in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Monday evening and opened fire. The ultras tried to ransack the property but the neighborhood came to the rescue of the family, the police added.
