While leaders of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress with all guns blazing, All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Rahul Gandhi sent a note of solidarity to TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after Sunday night's CBI-Kolkata Police fiasco. This has resulted in a lot of dilemma within the state Congress unit regarding their stand on the TMC.

After Sunday's fiasco, Rahul was one of the first leaders to respond with a tweet saying, "I spoke with Mamata Di tonight and told her we stand shoulder to shoulder with her. The happenings in Bengal are a part of the unrelenting attack on India's institutions by Mr Modi & the BJP. The entire opposition will stand together & defeat these fascist forces [sic]."

On the other hand, Congress MP and former state unit chief Adhir Chowdhury alleged that chit fund companies were patronised during TMC regime. Terming the Rajeev Kumar-led SIT probe into the scam as drama he said, "Although the SIT was formed, no one was held guilty...we see that the Police Commissioner had ignored CBI summons for questioning."

Asked about the party's contradictory stand, he said, "Rahul Gandhi had extended his support looking at the bigger picture at the Centre where an attempt is being made to bring all the Opposition parties together to oust the BJP from power. We are a state unit of the national party, and we have our own issues here in Bengal."

It is pertinent to mention here that Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday took a potshot at Rahul on the same issue. He said that Rahul who had spoken against the TMC in May 2014 on the issue of chit funds was now expressing his solidarity for the same party. “At least I respect Adhir Chowdhury on this issue for taking a firm stand,” he said.
