For parents in Ahmedabad, the new academic year threatens to bore bigger holes in their pocket, with cost of education going higher. Many reputed schools of Ahmedabad are set to implement 7% to 12% hike in their fee structure from this academic year.

Delhi Public School, The Calorx School, Anand Niketan in Satellite and Riverside School are among those educational institutions that have hiked their tuition fee across all classes while Ahmedabad International School has done so in only a few sections.

School authorities have cited increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for staff, maintenance cost and salaries as reason for fee hike. Riverside School has already implemented 8-12% hike across all classes while DPS and Anand Niketan have done so by 10% and 8% respectively. Calorx School, meanwhile, saw 3% increase in tuition fee.

According to Manjula Pooja Shroff, founder-DPS and managing director of Calorx School, tuition fee in her schools will see a hike of Rs3,000 to Rs3,500 above the current Rs30,000 each year. Anand Niketan, which charges a basic fee of Rs25,000 to Rs30,000, will now have its students pay Rs2,000 to Rs2,400 extra.

Speaking about the hike, Shroff said that the extra money will be spent on staff at the schools. “Around 70% of the total fee is dedicated to remuneration of the man-power. Apart from this, DA twice a year costs a bomb,” she added.

Sharing her views, Dr Tarulata, director - Ahmedabad International School, said that they have a rotation policy when it comes to fee hike. “We will hike fee by 5% to 7% in certain grades. However, finer details are yet to be worked out,” she said.

Parents, as expected, are not happy with this increase in fee. “Not only the tuition fee at schools, but also transportation charges and other expenses will go up. We have to bow down to school’s demands as we cannot compromise on our child’s education,” said a parent of a DPS student, requesting anonymity.
