Parents of Shubham (19) and Pranav Pandey (20), the two students battling for their lives with serious head injuries at the ICU of city's Apollo and Max hospitals, respectively, are still in shock. While they don't know who to blame for the situation, they are appalled at the indifference of onlookers who kept watching the children crying out for help, as they were stuck inside the mangled car.
"I received a call around 6 am on my phone, but I ignored it thinking it must be one of my patients. It again rang and at around 6:43 am, a voice on the other end told me that my son was badly injured in an accident. I didn't know how to react and in the same instance we left for Delhi," said, KK Pandey.
He added, the police told us that the students remained stuck in the vehicle for about 20 minutes to half an hour, before they received a PCR call.
"I can't believe how people could just keep watching the children bleed to death and did not come to help. It is such a big city, but has such a small heart," he said.
Pranav is a bright student and a lawn tennis player. "He had just told me that their sessional exams have just got over. They were getting bored of being in the PG and had decided to go out for dinner."
Pranav, who lived as a paying guest in Noida, hails from Allahabad. His parents, both doctors, said, they don't know what went wrong that night but they are just waiting for him to recover.
"He spoke to me for a brief second and said that all the boys were sitting together at the backseat chatting and joking when suddenly there was a loud noise and he found himself at the hospital bed," said, Anita Mishra, Pranav's mother.
While Shubham has received internal injuries in head and body, Pranav's forehead was badly hurt.
A senior surgeon at Apollo Hospital, said, "Besides, head injuries, he has got injuries in the spine, intestines, spleen and liver. He is under observation and can be shifted to the normal ward, day after tomorrow."
Five others of the group of ten travelling in the car, including Vijay, who was driving the Scorpio, miraculously escaped unhurt with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the police is still looking out for the tractor driver who fled from the spot. They have traced the tractor's owner to Hissar.
"We are on a hunt for the driver. So far it has emerged that the Scorpio hit the tractor-trolley from the back and damaged the left side of the car, which resulted in those seated at the left being injured. Also, since the students are still in a state of shock, we could not record their statements as of now," said a senior police officer.
The students were travelling from Noida to one of the dhabas at Murthal for a late night dinner. The group included three girls and all of them were engineering students.
The Police Control Room (PCR) received a call around 2:06 am regarding the accident. The tractor (HR 20 R 4359) carrying bricks was driving on the left side of the road near the Grand Orchid and Tivoli Farm House. The Scorpio was being driven at a high speed and the driver lost control and collided with the tractor.
