Opposition parties have started carefully calibrating their strategy to corner the Modi government both inside and outside the parliament on the "disastrous impact" on common man of the "ill timed" demonetization move and other issues — aftermath of surgical strikes and continuing Kashmir unrest.

The sudden impact of demonetization brought even the arch rivals CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) on the same page, at least for the time being, as their leaders — Derek O'Brien and Sitaram Yechury — shook hands at the meeting called by Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Leaders from RJD, JD(U), CPI, JMM, and YSR Congress were also present at the meet. Opposition parties will held the meeting again on Tuesday to discuss the strategy further in the presence of Samajwadi Party, Mayawati's BSP and AMIM that could not attend the meeting on Monday.

Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan also held a meeting with MPs of all parties where she discussed smooth functioning of the Lok Sabha where passage of important bills can face hurdles because of disruptions.

TMC's O'Brien proposed other parties to join their protest march from parliament to the President's house on the opening day of the parliament session on November 16 against the government's demonetization move but was yet to get a firm response from other parties, including Left parties and Congress.

CPI(M) party sources said that while they could join hands with TMC in parliament on this issue, but would not like to be seen with it outside as the party's West Bengal state unit is not happy with the idea. Congress also is weighing the pros and cons of such a move.

"We have decided to march down and meet the President against the anti-people move of the Central Government and would be happy if other parties join it," a TMC leader said.

TMC is trying to gather 100 opposition MPs to march and petition President Mukherjee against the government's notes ban.

While some parties want to take the Modi government head on, others don't want to be seen as opposing the larger "anti-black money" discourse among the people.

Mayawati attacks

Hoping that popular sentiment may soon turn against BJP because of sheer logistics crisis to implement demonetization, BSP supremo Mayawati launched a scathing attack on PM Narendra Modi for 'imposing economic emergency' on the country through his Nov 8 decision. BSP is expected to join united opposition meet on Tuesday to plan out strategy against the demonetisation move in Parliament.
