There is no relief for corporate lawyer Janhavi Gadkar for the time being. The Kurla magistrate court on Friday extended the judicial custody of the Chembur resident till July 10. Gadkar is accused of mowing down two people with her car in an inebriated state.

Turning down the bail plea of the 35-year-old accused, the court presided over by judge Richa Khedekar maintained that the charges levelled against her serious and it was possible that she could influence the witnesses if let out of jail now.

This time too Gadkar's mother Sudha marked her presence in the courtroom. When dna asked her if she would approach the higher court for bail, she said she was clueless. Gadkar's lawyers said they were yet to take a call on their next course of action.

Quoting the investigating officer, judge Khedekar said that the statements of the witnesses in the case were being recorded. She said the injured are still being treated at the hospital. "As per the investigating officer and prosecutor, material witnesses in the case are colleagues of the accused. In theses circumstances, the possibility of influencing the witnesses by pressuring them after getting bail cannot be ruled out," read her order.

Gadkar was arrested on June 10 hours after she rammed her Audi car into a taxi on the Eastern Freeway. Gadkar, who had consumed a lot of alcohol, was driving on the wrong side when the accident took place. The mishap led to the death of taxi driver Mohammad Abdul Sayyad (55) and Mohammad Salim Saboowala (50), who along with his wife and three children was returning from Bhiwandi after celebrating his son's success in the SSC exam.
