In what railway officials are calling nothing short of a miracle, an infant survived after falling on the tracks through a toilet opening moments after his mother delivered him inside a train toilet.

West Bengal resident Chandana Saha, in the final stages of labour, was travelling in the 50104 Ratnagiri-Dadar passenger train and the incident happened near Kasu station, about 177 kilometres away from CST. The incident happened around 11:45am on Sunday.

"Chandana delivered a baby boy in the washroom of the train. The child fell through the opening on the floor of the toilet and onto the tracks. Passengers in the coach KRSWR-99640 pulled the alarm chain and stopped the train," said a railway official.

Mayur Tayade, a Railway Protection Force constable, attended the alarm chain-pulling incident, walked on the tracks and picked up the newborn. "Thankfully he was unhurt. Tayade then called an ambulance and Chandana and the newborn was taken to Gadap civil hospital near Kasu," said an RPF officer.
