The commanding officer of six Assam Rifles was on Friday injured after a cook opened fire from his AK 47 gun at a camp at Sendra near Loktak Lake in Manipur. The bullets fired by the jawan hit a hand and leg of Colonel Neeraj, army sources said, adding that he is out of danger.
They said the jawan was overpowered by others present there but not before he emptied his magazine. Sources said that there was a showdown between the officer and the cook last night and the firing incident happened in the morning. An inquiry has been ordered by the Army into the incident.
The Army has witnessed eight cases of fratricide since 2012 besides suicide by 334 personnel during the same period.
