A man was shot dead by security forces on Saturday when he forcefully entered National Conference (NC) patron and MP Farooq Abdullah's Jammu residence. The man was driving a car and tried to barge into the residence in the vehicle. He was shot dead by security guards manning the residence, which the NC president shares with his son Omar Abdullah, also a former Chief Minister, at Bhatindi in Jammu.

He was later identified as Syed Murfaad Shah, a resident of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu SSP Vivek Gupta said the intruder had breached the main gate and went inside.

"He had a scuffle with the duty officers there. Duty officer was also injured. After that he entered the residence, there has been some sort of damage to the articles over there. Subsequently, he was shot dead," Gupta said.

Providing more details, Omar Abdullah tweeted, "I am aware of the incident that took place at the residence my father and I share in Bhatindi, Jammu. Details are sketchy at the moment. Initial reports suggest an intruder was able to gain entry through the front door and into the upper lobby of the house."

"Further details are awaited as the security personnel carry out the anti-sabotage checks and ascertain the background of the person who was able to force his way into the house," he added.

"There was an attempt of forceful entry into the house(Farooq Abdullah's) by an individual named Murfas Shah, a resident of Poonch. He forced his way through the VIP gate in an SUV. He was unarmed. Investigation is underway," SD Singh Jamwal, IG, Jammu Zone, said.

The father of the youth questioned why his son was shot dead and not arrested.

"He was with me last night. He goes to the gym daily and left for that today. I want to know why was he killed," the father said. "Where were the security guards when he breached the gate? Why didn't they arrest him?"

As the former Union Minister and the Chief Minister of the state, Mr Abdullah enjoys Z-Plus security cover. He is among four former chief ministers of the state – Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti - who enjoy highest security cover.

The incident comes as terrorists in the state have targeted several high profile people, including Rising Kashmir editor Shujat Bukhari and some politicians. In an overnight operation in south Kashmir's Shopian district, security forces killed 5 terrorists, police said on Saturday.
