Following the recent infiltration of ten suspected terrorists owing allegiance from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad in Gujarat and a day before Mahashivratri, Maharashtra chief minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday chaired an internal security coordination meeting with senior police officers and officials of Research & Analysis Wing and Intelligence Bureau to review security situation in the state.

"We are alert and will do whatever is required to secure the state. Nothing would be left unattended. Vital installations will be secured and target hardening will be done. All units of the ATS have been kept on alert and they will be coordinating with local police," said an official from Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad.

"We have sounded an alert all across the city. Adequate security measures have been taken. Police presence has been beefed up at all places frequented by foreigners, past targets and public places," said joint commissioner of police, law and order, Deven Bharti.

On the other hand, railway police have called in for a massive and random anti sabotage checks of platforms using visual searches and sniffer dogs. Random, but massive, checking of people on platforms and around stations will be done, said a railway police officer. "We would hold a meeting with our police mitras (stall owners, porters, shoeshine boys, dabbawalas etc and brief them). We would train them on how to spot suspicious activities, give them the numbers they should call if they see something wrong," he added.

The railway police will also coordinate with railway protection force and Mumbai police for armed deployment at all major railway stations. "We would also carry out mock drills with Force One commandos at various stations," the officer said.

Past instances of infiltration of Pakistan nationals via Gujarat

November 2008: Ten armed Pakistani terrorists, including Ajmal Amir Kasab had entered Mumbai from Karachi via sea route. They had hijacked an Indian trawler in Porbunder and used it to reach Mumbai. They then entered in a massive gun-battle with security forces and killed over 170 people in a terrorist attack launched at the behest of LeT.

December 2014 A Pakistani boat was blown off at the Porbandar coast. The ministry of defence (MoD), in its written statement, had said the coast guard had intercepted a "suspect boat carrying explosives" that was "planning some illicit transaction in Arabian Sea." Though the Indian authorities had stated that those on the boat had blown it, senior Indian Coast Guard officer BK Loshali had claimed that he had ordered to blow the boat off. Loshali was later dismissed from service.

April 2015 The Indian coast guard and Navy had intercepted a Pakistani boat Al-Yasir that was ferrying a huge quantity of heroin. As many as 232 packets of heroin weighing one kilogram each hidden in plastic cans were seized. Besides heroin, three satellite phones, two global positioning systems and one electronic navigation chart were also recovered. Eight Pakistani nationals were arrested in the case.
