With Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis backing Food and Civil Supplies Minister Girish Bapat's announcement  on Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT), it is likely that the state Government would do away with the tribunal in the near future.

Minister Girish Bapat on Tuesday had said that Maharashtra was seriously considering doing away with MAT which was overriding government decisions. Bapat had suspended nine tehsildars in connection with food-grains scam in Surgana Taluka of Nashik district. Even after Bapat's announcement of suspension on the floor of the state legislative council during the Budget Session, the MAT has given the tehsildars clean chit and revoked their suspension.

Chief Minister Fadnavis on Wednesday night told media persons that MAT was established with a view that High Courts are heavily burdened with pendency of cases and it would be provided with relief if grievances of government employees was sorted out at the MAT level. He said that since all the matters which go before the MAT ultimately go to High Court, the very purpose of setting up MAT was defeated as it was not helping in reducing the pendency.

Meanwhile, the trade unions of government employees expressed resentment over Bapat's statement and cautioned that they would oppose the decision tooth and nail. Maharashtra Rajya Rajpatrit Adhikari Mahasangh's President Manohar Pofale and general secretary Sameer Bhatkar told the federation of gazetted officers in the state that the federation would hold a meeting on July 5 to decide the future course of action if the government remains firm on its proposal.
