Pune district, which witnessed an uproar over missing names from the voters' list before the Lok Sabha polls, has seen highest registration during the recent enrollment drive by the election commission (EC) for the assembly polls due in October.

As per the latest data available with EC, out of the 22 lakh people who registered in the past four months, 2.66 lakh new voter enrollments were in Pune district, which comprises 21 assembly constituencies. Mumbai's 36 assembly constituencies (island city and suburbs), despite higher population density, saw only 1.95 lakh fresh enrollments. "Heavy enrollment of new voters reflects that our extensive drive has been a success. Our teams have been able to go to the remotest areas to enroll for the assembly polls," said a senior election officer.

The EC officials, however, refuse to admit that the success of this drive reflects on the faulty omissions before the Lok Sabha polls. "Out of these, only 16,614 cases in Mumbai and 27,542 cases in Pune relate to those whose names were deleted earlier. Most cases are of fresh enrollments and not deletions," the officer said.

EC's Maharashtra wing was pulled up after Lok Sabha polls after a series of complaints of missing names and faulty deletions from the rolls came from all over the state. The EC even had to face a legal case in Bombay high court filed by a group of activists who demanded re-elections.

"To avoid any inconvenience to voters in this election, we would request them to check their names in the electoral rolls available on our website, and if found missing, they must immediately register with us," the officer added.

However, despite the Bombay high court not finding any breach in the poll body's statutory compliance, the EC decided to take outreach and facilitation measures in the interest of citizens' smooth participation in the election.

A special summary revision was conducted in the entire state between June 9 and June 30. Two special campaigns of two days each were held during the period and the draft electoral roll was published at all polling stations and on notice boards of electoral registration officers. The roll was also displayed on the website of the chief electoral officer along with search facility.
