Talib Hussain, a social activist and advocate who led the agitation against the rapists in the Kathua gang rape-cum-murder has been accused of domestic violence.

According to a report in The Indian Express, an FIR was filed after preliminary enquiry by the police into the complaint of Talib’s wife Nusrat Begum, 30.The directions for inquiry come on Thursday came from Shabnam Sheikh, the Chief Judicial Magistrate.

The police said that Talib had married Nusrat in 2015 and the couple have two children. The FIR was registered after neighbours told police that Nusrat along with her two daughters had been living in her father Mohammad Tahir’s home since her husband allegedly physically assaulted her for dowry.

The police said they planned to get Nusrat’s statement recorded before a judicial magistrate under Section 164 Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) before proceeding against Tali. He has been booked under various provisions of RPC including domestic violence, demanding dowry, threatening his wife and attempting to murder her.

His brother has also been booked for molestation and attempting to intimidate. Talib along with Deepika Singh Rajawat had become the face of those standing up for the Kathua rape-murder victim.

The eight-year-old child belonging to a minority nomadic community was allegedly kidnapped on January 10 by a juvenile nephew of the main accused, Sanji Ram, and later killed on January 14. Her body was recovered on January 17.

According to investigators, Sanji Ram was aware she had been kidnapped but didn't know about the rape.

Besides Sanji Ram and his juvenile nephew, others named in the charge sheet filed by the crime branch are his son Vishal, special police officers Deepak Khajuria and Surender Verma and friend Parvesh Kumar alias Mannu.

It also names head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta -- who allegedly took Rs 4 lakh from Sanji Ram and destroyed crucial evidence.

The district and sessions court in Pathankot framed charges of rape and murder against the seven accused in the case on June 8.

Pathankot District and Sessions judge Tajwinder Singh also issued directions for bone ossification test of one of the accused Parvesh Kumar alias Mannu to determine his age after the defence counsel moved an application last week for treating him as a minor citing his matriculation certificate
