It seems no lessons have been learnt following the flyover collapse in Kolkata in March earlier this year. Almost seven months after that incident which claimed as many as 27 lives and injured several others, yet another under-construction flyover in Bengal's Hooghly district collapsed.

On Sunday morning at about 9.30 am, a portion of the flyover in Hooghly’s Mogra gave way. While no was injured in the incident, a truck was stuck beneath the collapsed portion of the flyover. The driver escaped unhurt as he was not present when the incident occurred.

While railway officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, officials of the Hoogly district police carried out a search to check whether anyone or any other vehicles were stuck under the debris.

However, locals allege that the railway authorities did not take adequate security measures while constructing the flyover.

"A major tragedy has been averted. This is a very densely populated area. Luckily, the collapse took place on a Sunday morning, hence there were no people underneath. Had it been a working day, several would had been left dead," said Dibyendu Malakar, a local, who resides close to the GT Road, adjacent to the flyover.

A committee of experts and engineers has been set up to probe into the collapse and find out the cause of the collapse.

On March 31, this year, a portion of another under construction flyover in Kolkata’s Jorasanko area collapsed leaving as many as 27 people dead and several others injured. Later, three FIRs were filed by the Kolkata Police against IVRCL – the company responsible for the construction of the flyover. Several senior officials of the IVRCL were also arrested by the Kolkata Police.
