Kolkata: Madrasa headmaster allegedly beaten up

A headmaster of a madrasa in Kolkata's Metiabruz area, Kazi Masum Akhtar was allegedly beaten by miscreants on March 26. 

Akhtar claimed that he was beaten up by miscreants with iron rods in the presence of police officers. The police arrived at the spot, but he was attacked even before they could rescue him. "They beat me up because they think I make comments that are against Islam. But I have never made comments that go against my religion. My life is under threat and I will soon be writing to the West Bengal chief minister,” Akhtar told dna.
 
Akhtar sustained serious injuries, after which he was admitted to a local hospital and was released on March 29. However, certain city-based Muslim clerics have denied that such an attack over Akhtar took place.

The headmaster used to write columns in regional dailies that allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of some people. 

While the locals have filed an FIR against Akhtar with the Rajabagan police station, Akhtar has filed a counter FIR against the miscreants. “Locals have filed an FIR against Akhtar citing reasons of hurting religious sentiments through his statements and writings. On the other hand, Akhtar has also filed an FIR against the accused, who had beaten him up,” said an official of the Rajabagan police station.

“We have made no arrests so far in connection with this case. The matter is under investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port division), Imran Wahab.
