Watch: Traffic jam after crack at Bidhannagar's Ultadanga flyover, vehicular movement suspended for 3 days

Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate Tuesday shut the movement of traffic on the Ultadanga flyover for the next three days in Kolkata.

This happened after the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority(KMDA) reported a crack on one of the piers of the flyover.

The shutdown brought the city to a grinding halt causing huge traffic jams in various parts of the city.

The crack was found when the KMDA engineers were on their routine inspection of the flyover on Tuesday afternoon.

According to local reports, the crack was found in the portion of the Ultadanga flyover that connected the VIP road to the EM Bypass road in Kolkata, which collapsed in 2013.

The KMDA reported the incident to the police after which the Ultadanga Flyover was shut down.

The closing down of the flyover caused huge traffic in the surrounding areas of Biswa Bangla Sarani and Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani in Kolkata.

Firhad Hakim, Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs of West Bengal Government said, " Normally there is a 30-year guarantee after making of a flyover".

"How does a crack appear on the flyover after 10 years", he further added.

Firhad Hakim said that the Principal Secretary Subrata Gupta will send a letter to the construction company, Mackintosh Burn Limited, who was involved in the construction of the flyover, demanding a response to the incident reported by the KMDA.

The KMDA authorities will conduct a detailed investigation into the matter tomorrow or day after tomorrow.
