Happiness knew no bounds for Kashmiri teenager Insha Mushtaq, blinded by pellets during Valley unrest in 2016, when she learnt on Tuesday that she had cleared her Class X board exam and was promoted to next grade.

Insha, 16-year-old girl from Sadew village of Shopian, became the face of pellet victims when she lost vision in both of her eyes after being hit by a barrage of pellet shots while watching the protests from her window in 2016 Valley unrest.

Anger had swept across Kashmir, prompting the government to airlift her to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi for treatment. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had visited her at AIIMS. Despite efforts by doctors in Kashmir and Delhi, she could not regain her eyesight.

“We can’t express our happiness in words. She is extremely happy after the results”, said Mushtaq Ahmad, her father.

Insha had appeared for the exams availing the facility of writing assistant to write her papers. According to Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education, Insha has qualified the Class X but needs to improve. Baring Maths, she has cleared all papers including English, Urdu and Science.

Family sources said she prepared hard for the exams and a tutor was engaged to teach her at home.

Athough she has passed the exam, her dream of becoming a doctor was shattered by the pellet guns.

Soon after the results, the social media was flooded with congratulatory messages for Insha.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah too took to twitter to congratulate Insha. “A special shout out to young Insha who was blinded by pellets during the 2016 protests & has cleared her 10th exams today. May Allah keep rewarding your hard work & efforts”, he said.
