"A team of senior leaders including MLAs will rush to Kashmir valley tomorrow to oversee the flood situation and render help to the people along with activists and workers in valley", Chief Spokesman Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Ravinder Sharma said.
Sharma said that these directions have been passed by the JKPCC President Gulam Ahmed Mir at high level meeting of its newly elected body on Tuesday. He said that our teams of workers are ready at the ground and a team of leaders is already monitoring them. Mir has already asked its cadres to come to the rescue of the needy in the state.
"Congress cadres have been asked to come to the rescue of the needy and start community kitchens with other facilities in respective areas so that the people get the much-needed succor amid trying circumstances", Sharma said.
The Party also passed resolution seeking immediate help and material from the Centre to the people of J&K along with immediate passage of the Rs 44,000 crores relief and rehabilitation package submitted to Centre by the then Congress-NC government immediately, he said.
Terming the incident as "unfortunate and painful", JKPCC President Ahmed Mir said state administration should have taken measures to evacuate those families who were residing at higher reaches in valley. He has asked the government to shift the people to safer places who are residing at higher reaches, so that Hajam Mohalla like incident will not occur again, as more rains is predicted by the Met Department.
He said there is an urgent need for dredging of River Jehlum and other Nallahs and their strong embankment, so that September (2014) like floods will not occur again in Kashmir Valley.
