A week after he appeared for questioning, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday told the Supreme Court that there was a good, cogent reason for lookout circulars against former Union Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram, in connection with a corruption case.

The FIR, lodged by CBI on May 15, had alleged irregularities in Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Karti's father was the Finance Minister.

The top court refused Karti's plea to move abroad and made it clear that he cannot leave India. The look-out notice will continue till September 11.

The CBI also placed documents in a sealed cover in the apex could, saying Karti's case not simple but involves jugglery of accounts and property abroad.

The Supreme Court has also asked the CBI to respond to Karti Chidambaram's affidavit on his questioning by investigators in the case of alleged graft.

The apex court will hear the matter on September 11.

Last week, after the direction of the top court, Karti Chidambaram appeared before the CBI as the investigation agency wanted to examine him in connection with a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to media group INX Media for receiving funds from Mauritius when his father P Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister.

It is alleged that a firm "indirectly controlled" by him received money from INX Media, run by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea.

Earlier, Karti had approached the Madras High Court which had stayed the circular. The Supreme Court later put on hold the high court order.

Former finance minister P Chidambaram had issued a strong statement in response to the FIR, saying that the government was using the CBI and other agencies to target his son.

FIPB approval was granted in "hundreds of cases", the senior Congress leader had said.
