In a high-octane drama witnessed at the city airport here on Sunday morning, JNU student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar and six of his companions were deboarded from a Jet airways flight to Pune, along with a co-passenger, leading to chaos inside the terminal.

It all started with Kanhaiya, who rose to instant fame a few months back after being charged with sedition, accusing the passenger sitting next to him, later identified as Manas Jyoti Deka, of attempting to 'strangulate' him. "Yet again, this time inside the aircraft, a man tries to strangulate me," Kanhaiya had tweeted.

Police, however, found Kanhaiya's allegations to be baseless.

Joint commissioner of police (law & order) Deven Bharti said, "We have not found any evidence on the allegations that Manas tried to strangulate Kanhaiya. Prima facia it was revealed that Manas, with a wound on his leg, lost his balance while getting out of his seat and put his hand on Kanhaiya's shoulder". He further said, "Arguments began after the incident and in our investigation we have not found any evidence to back Kanhaiya's claim. We will further investigate the matter. A cross-complaint from both the sides have been registered."

Kanhaiya was on his way to Pune to participate in an event. After deplaning, he is said to have continued his journey by road.

Deka, who is said to be working with a leading software giant, in his statement to the local police, said that he was assigned seat number 37A while Kanhaiya was seated next to him on seat number 37B. As the seat front had narrow space, his hand fell on to the shoulder of Kanhaiya, leading to allegations and chaos inside the aircraft 9W 618. The flight had 94 passengers and crew members on board and was scheduled to depart at 10:05 am. The fight finally took off at 11:10 am after completing the deplaning process.

The Jet staff found the situation too hot to handle and after consulting the pilot decided to deplane all eight of them. Simultaneously, the Sahar police was informed with ACP Suresh Vedak and senior inspector Babu Mukhedkar reaching the aerobridge number 50 to take control of the situation.

"All of them were then brought to the arrival area of the airport and then taken to the local police station and a non-cognizable complaint was registered," a CISF official aware of the situation told dna.

Kanhaiya also blamed Jet airways for deplaning him instead of the 'accused'. "Jet airways takes an interesting stand. They ask us to deplane for security reasons along with the man who assaulted me," he tweeted. " Basically Jet airways sees no difference between someone who assaults and the person who is assaulted. They will deplane you, if you complain," he further added. Kanhaiya also alleged that Deka is a strong BJP supporter.

Jet airways, however, in a statement said, "Some guests on Jet airways flight 9W 618 (Mumbai-Pune) were off loaded at Mumbai airport in the interest of operational safety."
