Passengers may be delighted when celebrities oblige to entertain them on flights, but for the regulatory bodies for aviation, the idea is certainly a big no-no. The crew members of a Jet Airways flight who allowed popular playback singer Sonu Nigam to sing using the airline's announcing system, have now been suspended.
On January 4, passengers on a Jet Airways chartered plane requested Sonu Nigam, who was in the same flight, to sing for them. The singer agreed to their request and the airhostesses too obliged. Nigam performed two songs 'Do pal ruka' from Yash Raj Films' Veer Zaara and 'Panchhi nadiya' from Abhishek Bachchan's Refugee much to the joy of passengers who joined in. The video of Nigam's impromptu mid-air concert were posted by some passengers on social media and had gone viral.
However, the episode has not turned not well for the crew members. After the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) took a serious note of the episode, Jet Airways suspended five airhostesses for allowing a passenger to take over the carrier's in-flight announcement system, according to a report in a leading daily.
"All cabin crew on the flight have been taken off flight duty for enquiry and corrective training to reinforce strict adherence to operating procedures," a statement by the carrier said. It has also said that such 'misuse' of in-flight announcement system is disallowed in the future.
A similar incident had happened to another private airline when it made crew members in some of its flights dance to a Bollywood song 'Balam Pichkari' on Holi.
The DGCA issued a show cause notice to the carrier and asked why its licence should not be suspended. It said that such acts by the cabin crew distracts other crew members in the flight affecting their vigilance. It also said that the dancing activity may have affected aircraft's centre of gravity during the flight and could have created turbulence. It also added that the airline may have led the passengers to become unruly and that the carrier broke several safety regulations.
However, Indian passengers have reportedly said that international carriers allow their crew to sing and dance. They even say that one such carrier in its flight from and to India has the crew dancing to Shah Rukh Khan's 'Om Shanti Om' on Republic Day and Independence Day.
