AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been announced as party candidate for the June 27 by-election to Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly Constituency, a seat vacated by her party MLA P Vetrivel.

A decision to this effect was taken at the AIADMK Parliamentary Board meeting here, Jayalalithaa said in a party statement. She had been tipped to contest from the constituency following Vetrivel's resignation.

Jayalalithaa had earlier represented her native Srirangam constituency prior to her conviction in the disproportionate assets case by a Bengaluru special court on September 27 last.

As a result, she had to resign her assembly membership.

She was subsequently acquitted by the Karnataka High Court on May 11, allowing her to return as Chief Minister of the state for the fifth time.

Jayalalithaa assumed the office of chief minister again on May 23 and would have to be elected as MLA within six months.

In the present Assembly, AIADMK enjoys a strong majority of 150 members in the 234-member house.

PMK on Friday alleged that money power plays a 'larger role' in bypolls and decided not to contest the byelection to the RK Nagar Assembly constituency in Chennai, becoming the fourth party in the state to do so.

DMK, Tamil Maanila Congress and Viduthalai Chiruthaaigal Katchi had already announced that they will not contest.

"Money power plays a larger role in byelections.... if the ruling party assures that it will not distribute money and buy votes, PMK will consider to contest. However, there is no such chance of it happening. Hence the party has decided to not to contest the June 27 bypoll..." PMK founder S Ramadoss told a press conference.

PMK will lead a front in Tamil Nadu in the 2016 assembly elections, he said.

On allegations that his party MP and former union minister Anbumani Ramadoss had underutilised the MPLAD fund, he claimed that Anbumani has provided funds to 299 works in the respective area.
