Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja on Saturday asserted that the Bangalore special court's verdict against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is significant, which will definitely have an impact on the politics in that state.

"It is a very old case, 18 years-old- case, continuously trial was going on, even the courts were changed, from Tamil Nadu the case was moved to other state, Karnataka, so it was going on and it is a very significant judgement that has come today. It means the Chief Minister cannot remain as Chief Minister, she has to step down," Raja told ANI here.

He also stated that the court's verdict against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will not have any immediate threat to the state government. "As far as Tamil Nadu government is concerned, I do not foresee any immediate threat to the government. The government will be in office but who is going to head the government once she steps down, that is yet to be seen. Who is going to be nominated. What party is going to do, what Madam Jayalalithaa is going to do, these are the questions we will have to wait and see," he said.

A Bangalore Special Court today in its verdict convicted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in the disproportionate assets case, under Prevention of Corruption Act. This court's verdict means that Jayalalithaa stands disqualified as an MLA and therefore, she will have to step down as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Reports say that along with her the court also found her ex-aide VK Sasikala guilty. Meanwhile, the quantum of sentence is expected to be pronounced by the Court this afternoon around 3.00 pm.

The AIADMK chief has been convicted for obtaining assets worth almost Rs 66 crore through dishonest means during her first tenure as Chief Minister between 1991 and 1996.
