IPTA to pay tribute to AK Hangal at Mumbai's Prithvi Theatre

Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) will pay tribute to the works of veteran actor AK Hangal, who started his acting journey with theatre, at a ceremony at the Prithvi Theatre on Monday.

Hangal, who was involved with IPTA along with other veterans inclduing Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday following a prolonged illness. He was 97.

“Tomorrow August 27 between 4-5 pm, ceremony for AK Hangal Saheb at Prithvi Theatre, Juhu. All are welcome. Please spread the word. Organised by IPTA,” veteran actress Shabana Azmi tweeted.

Hangal's love towards theatre started during his childhood days in Peshawar, now in Pakistan. He grew up to be a tailor, but quenched his thirst for acting through theatre.

Post partition, he is said to have moved to Mumbai in 1949 and stepped into the Hindi film industry in 1966-67. His initial films included Teesri Kasam and Shagird.
