The IMC health department officials seized 45 kg of plastic bags during a drive launched
on Wednesday.
A team of IMC led by the chief health officer Dr DC Garg carried out the drive in Nandlalpura vegetable market, Biyabani main road, Dwarkapuri and Ganga Nagar area. During the drive, IMC squad carried out a sudden inspection at as many as 20 shops.
The team seized around 45 kgs of polythene bags below 40 micron thickness from Ganesh Paper Products, Sagar Plastics, Chandlal Plastic Disposal, Tal Bags Works, Kanchan Disposal and Subhamshri Disposal.
In similar drives, the civic body has managed to seize around 255 kgs of polythene bags last month.
The merchants were also advised to use polythene bags of above 40 micron thickness or switch to paper or jute bags.
Despite of the efforts of civic body, the use of paper and jute bags has not come into practice mostly due to its higher cost in comparison to the polythene carry bags.
“As the cost of paper/jute bags is at least five times higher than the polythene bags, its not being widely used,” said IMC health officer, Dr Natwar Sharada.
