Hopes float for BJP in Jammu and Kashmir after Delhi drubbing

BJP may have lost Delhi but the Jammu and Kashmir is on course. Clouds of Delhi verdict has failed to overshadow the negotiations between the BJP and People's Democratic Party (PDP) for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Is BJP on a weak wicket after the Delhi verdict?

"Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir are two separate issues. PDP has got mandate in Kashmir and BJP has won in Jammu. Both should honour the verdict and form the government. Delhi elections will not have impact on the process," Vibodh Gupta, senior state vice president of BJP told dna

Does J&K offer a ray of hope to BJP?

BJP, which has emerged second largest party with 25 seats in 87 member House, is hoping to seal a deal with PDP for forming the next government in Jammu and Kashmir after the elections threw a fragmented verdict in December 2014.

There was however apprehensions that PDP might feel uncomfortable to ally with BJP. But PDP, which has emerged single largest party with 28 seats, however was quick to allay the fears saying "The results in Delhi will not have any impact on their ties with BJP," much to the cheer of saffron party.

Will PDP try to extract a pie from the weak BJP after Delhi drubbing?

PDP has been vocal about the issues like revocation of AFSPA and starting dialogue with Pakistan and separatists to end the stalemate. Observers feel after the Delhi drubbing, PDP may harden its stand to extract a pie from the BJP which is now at crossroads. "Our alliance is focused on certain objectives and certain goals. If we will achieve we will go with them (BJP). If it did not materialise then we will not. We have been saying it from the beginning. It (alliance) will depend on the kind of common minimum programme (CMP) we are able to make," said Naeem Akthar, chief spokesman of PDP.

Can the two parties reach the majority figure in J&K?

PDP emerged as the single largest party winning 28 seats in the recently concluded polls. BJP came second winning 25 seats, all of them from Jammu division. A formation needs 44 members in the 87 member House to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir was placed under the governor's rule on January 8 following Omar Abdullah's decision to step down as the caretaker chief minister.
