Home Ministry increases salaries of special police officers in Valley by 50-100%

New scales of remuneration would be implementable with immediate effect. According to official of the State’s Home Department, the proposal sent by J&K Government in this regard was cleared by the MHA within 48 hours.

Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has increased the salaries of Special Police Officers (SPOs) by 50 to 100 percent in an apparent bid to instill confidence and raise their morale the unsung heroes of Jammu and Kashmir police.

“The proposal of the State Government regarding the enhancement of monthly remuneration of the SPOs of J&K has been considered by this Ministry,” said a communication from MHA addressed to the J&K Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam.

Under the approved scheme, the SPOs, who have less than 5 years of service would be henceforth paid monthly remuneration of Rs 6000, those who have completed five years of service would be paid Rs 9000 per month and those who have completed 15 years of service would be paid Rs 12000 per month.

New scales of remuneration would be implementable with immediate effect.  According to official of the State’s Home Department, the proposal sent by J&K Government in this regard was cleared by the MHA within 48 hours.

“Around 30000 SPOs presently working in the State would be benefitted by this substantial hike. As per the existing scale, the SPOs who have rendered one year of service were being paid Rs 5000 remuneration per month, the SPOs who have rendered between 1 and 2 years of service were being paid Rs 5500 per month and those who have completed more than two years were being paid Rs 6000 per month”, said the official .

The decision to hike the salaries has come after several SPOs announced resignation after three cops-- Nisar Ahmed Dhobi, Firdous Ahmed and Kulwant Singh-- were abducted and shot dead by the militants of Lashkar-e-Tioba and Hizbul Mujhadeen in twin villages of Kapran and Batagund in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday morning. 

Later Hizbul Mujhadeen issued fresh threats to policemen including officers, and women cops to quit or remain ready for the consequences.  Hizbul also circulated a list of policemen including officers with photographs on the social media asking them to resign within two days or face the consequences.

Special Police Officers are the casual employees of the Police department who work on monthly consolidated salary of Rs 5000 to Rs 6000. There are more than 30000 SPOs in Jammu and Kashmir. SPOs are the unsung heroes of the police department who performing multitasking in Jammu and Kashmir. From fighting militants, to clearing traffic to helping cops to bust crime, the SPOs are the backbone of the one lakh plus strong J&K Police. More than 500 SPOs have been killed fighting militants since the insurgency started in 1990.
