In a message that is bound to raise eyebrows, union home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday raised questions on conversions, saying there is a need for national debate on issues related to it.

Speaking at the one-day conference of minority commissions of states, Singh said, there is need for a national debate on questions – Is conversion necessary? Can social service not be performed without resorting to conversion? Can no religion prosper without encouraging conversion? Will any country allow changes in its demographic character? And is it not true that the minorities demand anti-conversion law all over the world but not in India?

Facing nationwide outrage over the aggressive vitriolic "ghar-wapsi" or re-conversion campaign by Sangh Parivar affiliates, the BJP has been pressing for a strong anti-conversion law.

At the same time trying to project an all-encompassing face of India as home to maximum religions in the world amid frequent attacks on minority institutions, especially churches by right wing activists, Rajnath Singh assured that he would go to any extent to protect minorities.

Referring to the feeling of insecurity by the minorities a great challenge, Singh said the government is committed to ensuring that a sense of security is provided to the minorities.

"I will do everything to end the sense of insecurity prevailing among minorities….There are a lot of misconceptions… But the government cannot do everything. On issues like ghar wapsi and religious conversions, the cooperation of society too is required," said Singh addressing officials of state minorities commissions.
