The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed that normalcy be maintained at Jadavpur University and that agitating students would not block the entry of faculty members, staff and willing students into the campus. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Asim Banerjee directed in an interim order that normalcy has to return to the prestigious university where the students are boycotting classes since September 16.

The students are demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty on whose written requisition police had entered the campus and physically removed the students who had gheraoed the VC and escorted him out of the campus. The bench directed that a police outpost be set up outside the campus so that the police personnel are available to prevent any untoward incident. The bench further directed that entry into the campus should be restricted to students, faculty and staff and any outsider willing to enter would have to obtain a pass from university staff posted at the gates.

The court directed that if any student was willing to agitate, they might do so outside the campus or at a place fixed within the campus. During the hearing, both the vice-chancellor and a number of girl students were present in the court room. Chakraborty, who has not gone to the university citing illness since the police action on students to take him out of the campus in the wee hours of September 17, had not been summoned by the court.

He was escorted out by police personnel as soon as the hearing concluded and was taken out through a narrow exit to the adjoining City Civil Court where his vehicle was parked apparently to escape waiting lensmen. Asked by PTI whether he was happy with the order, the vice-chancellor said, "I have not seen the order." The division bench passed the interim order acting on a PIL by professor Bimal Nanda of Charuchandra College affiliated to Calcutta University seeking restoration of normalcy and resumption of classes in the university.
