Gujarat Elections 2017: Most rich candidates bite the dust

Dhanjibhai Patel from Wadhwan in Surendranagar district defeated his Congress rival Mohan Patel by a margin of over 21,000 votes.

Billionaires didn’t find it going easy in Gujarat polls. A large number of them had to taste defeat and only two from BJP made it to the hustings.

Dhanjibhai Patel from Wadhwan in Surendranagar district defeated his Congress rival Mohan Patel by a margin of over 21,000 votes. Dhanjibhai had assets worth Rs 115 crore.

Former Industries Minister and BJP strongman Saurabh Patel won from Botad after a roller coaster ride. Patel, whose assets had doubled in last five years, has declared assets worth Rs 135 crore in in 2017 affidavit.

Indranil Rajguru of Congress, with assets worth Rs 141 crore lost to Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani by a margin of 55,000 votes from Rajkot – West constituency. It was one of the most high profile contests in the state as it was matter of do-or-die for ruling BJP. Rajguru had represented Rajkot East earlier.

Congress candidate from Daskroi in Ahmedabad, Pankaj Patel, who was the richest candidate with assets worth Rs 231 crore lost to BJP strongman Babu Jamna Patel, who had declared assets worth Rs 48 crore.

Ashok Lal, a Congress candidate from Jamnagar – South lost to former BJP state President R C Faldu by a margin of 16,000 votes. Lal had declared assets worth Rs 109 crore.

Congress candidate Raghu Desai from Chanasma in north Gujarat lost to outgoing Labour and Employment Minister Dilip Thakor of BJP. Desai had declared assets worth Rs 108 crore.

Dharmendra Vaghela, and independent candidate who was challenging BJP strongman Madhu Srivastava from Vaghodia in Vadodara lost by a margin of 21,000 votes. Vaghela was supported by Congress and had declared assets worth Rs 97 crore in his affidavit.
