Union minister for surface transport Nitin Gadkari had a word of advice for mayor Sagar Naik and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) when he was in the city on Friday.

He advised the mayor to implement green initiatives in the satellite city through the civic body. Gadkari's response came after the mayor in his speech at the inauguration of property exhibition in Vashi, outlined the achievements of the corporation, among which one of them was releasing treated sewerage water in the creek.

"You [NMMC] are treating sewerage water before releasing it into the creek is a good thing. Many of the civic corporations in the country simply release sewerage into the rivers or seas and this leads to pollution. However, I have a suggestion which I have implemented in Nagpur Municipal Corporation. We use this water for generation of electricity," said Gadkari in his speech.

The Union minister added, "Such water can also be used at Navi Mumbai gardens and residents should be made aware of the use of such water, whereby, the use of fresh water is decreased. Efforts should also be made to sell such treated water to industries and add to civic revenue."

Emphasising on the need for cutting down on pollution, Gadkari said there is a need to run electric buses in the satellite city. "In Nagpur, we have electric bus which is still running. Such initiatives help in cutting down pollution levels in the city. More and more use of bio-fuels should be made so that we cut down on import bill of crude oil and also on pollution."

The civic body has been trying to sell treated water to industries in MIDC belt, but has found no takers since the cost of pure water itself is less in the city (Rs50 for 30,000 litres of water). However, the civic body uses the water only at gardens near the sewerage treatment plant sites.
