A day ahead of the results of one of the most keenly-watched elections, the Election Commission (EC) has said that it has made arrangements for “robust, foolproof and secured infrastructure facilities” for disseminating the results. The EC also said that trends and results will be updated regularly.

Counting will start from 8 am and by 12 pm it will be clearer who will win in the five states where elections were held. Counting will take place at over 157 centres — 75 in Uttar Pradesh, 53 in Punjab, 15 in Uttarakhand, 12 in Manipur and two in Goa.

An EC release said that it will release an interactive dashboard, which will be open to the public. “The users will get constituency-wise analysis, such as for constituencies with a higher number of female electors, constituencies with slabs of voter turnout, the turnout according to polling days and a gender-wise break-up of participants, winners and major competitors,” said Rajesh Malhotra, Additional Director General (Media & Communications), Press Information Bureau.

As per EC guidelines, soon after postal ballots are counted, the counting of EVM votes are carried out by poll officials, with agents of various candidates in attendance. In places where a voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) has been used, the counting agent can call for a count of the paper slips in the drop box attached to the voting machine. However, a final count is taken by the returning officer.
