While news of flood-affected people feeding on rats has prompted Bihar's ruling dispensation to spring into action, the Opposition has decried the "complete failure of the government".

Flood victims in Katihar district's Dangi Tola village, where some 300 families have been affected, say they haven't received any relief from the government and are forced to survive on rodents.

"Our house has been destroyed and there are no arrangements for us. We are depending on rats to fill our stomachs as they are easy to find in the floods," said Talla Murmur, a local, while speaking to ANI.

Rushing to control the damage, state agriculture minister Prem Kumar instructed the district magistrate to provide immediate relief to the victims.

In the state legislature, the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal again proposed to adjourn the House on the flooding issue. But the Speaker did not consider the adjournment motion.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told the House that "the government will provide Rs 6,000 in the account of flood victims". Some 25 lakh people have been affected. He said community kitchens have been set up and rehabilitation will begin on Friday.

But RJD legislator Bhai Virendra said, "The government has completely failed to provide relief to flood victims." Congress leaders too joined the chorus.

BJP leader Sanjay Saraogi accused the Opposition of politicising the issue. "RJD should first say where the Leader of Opposition is."

Meal Of Rats

  • Eating rats is not new to Bihar. Nearly 25 lakh Musahars, or rat eaters, are one of the most marginalised communities
  • Living in abject poverty, the ostracised community has received no welfare aid from successive govts
