Congress president Rahul Gandhi plans to hold a rally on farmers' issues in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, where elections are due this year end.

Sources say that Congress is keen to rope in other leaders from Opposition parties for the rally as well and the Congress president has also talked to rebel JDU MP Sharad Yadav in this regard.

As party vice president, Gandhi had visited the farmer agitation hit regions of the state in June last year after the Mandsaur farmer protests and met family members of the farmers killed allegedly in police firing.

Yadav belongs to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and has been in forefront in organising "Saanjhi Virasat Bachao (Save Composite Culture) conferences in states. The lull that was there in such meetings due to Gujarat assembly polls will be over now as Opposition leaders plan more such conferences in near future.

In his conversation with Gandhi some days ago, Yadav is learnt to have told the Congress president that the programme could be the best medium to bring all hues of Opposition parties together on a stage and it's time the Saanhi Virasat programme was again started. Gandhi is learnt to have expressed his agreement.

Yadav has also held deliberations over it with CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh chief and Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar. Yadav met Ambedkar in the national capital on Sunday.

Ambedkar, who is the grandson of Dalit icon and architect of India's Constitution B R Amedkar, met Yadav here a day after he said that Congress on its own cannot beat the BJP till 2024 but the scene can change if Left parties take the initiative to form a grand alliance against the BJP. He had also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's image as a non-corrupt leader is still intact.

On his meeting with Ambedkar, Yadav merely said that the current political situation and challenges before the nation was discussed. The meeting took place on a day when CPI-M's central committee rejected a draft proposal of its general secretary Sitaram Yechury, who favoured the idea of forging an understanding with the Congress to oust the BJP from power at the Centre.
