A woman and her two kids, aged between one and half months and 3 years, were burnt alive allegedly by her in-laws for want of dowry in Prayagipur village in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

Their charred bodies were recovered from a room bolted from outside on Friday morning. The victim’s mother alleged that her daughter and two kids were burnt alive by her in-laws and other family members as she failed to bring adequate dowry.

On the complaint from the mother, the police have registered a case against her husband, in-laws and two others at the Manda Police Station. The police have arrested her mother-in-law and two other family members while the husband and the father-in-law were on the run.

“Ever since her marriage four years ago, she was being harassed and beaten by her husband and in-laws to bring in more dowry or they will not allow her to stay in the house. Only two months ago, my daughter had confided that they will kill her and kids if their demands were not met,” alleged the victim’s mother.

The police also believe that the woman and her kids did not commit suicide but were burnt alive. The police have found signs of a struggle in the room which was bolted from outside and burn marks on the hands of arrested persons Prima Facie, it looked like they were murdered, the police added.

“We are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death. More charges will be slapped on the accused after that report,” said Manda Police.
