Political impasse in Jammu and Kashmir further deepened on Wednesday when People's Democratic Party rejected the offer of support by Omar Abdullah's National Conference for government formation in the militancy torn state.

When did NC offer support to its arch rival PDP?
In a communiqué to the governor NN Vohra on Tuesday, NC working president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah informed that NC has offered to support to PDP, which has emerged as the single largest party in the just concluded assembly elections. "However, the political impasse in the state, due to indecisiveness of the PDP has led to the imposition of the governor's rule and placing the state Assembly in suspended animation despite an overwhelming participation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the electoral process", the letter reads.

Why did the PDP reject the offer?
"This is an attempt by them (NC) to come to power by backdoor after being rejected by the people. They (NC) must realise they have no role in government formation. It goes without saying that we have been fighting them for six years, their policies, programmes, their corruption and their crimes against people," Naeem Akthar, chief spokesman of PDP, told dna.

How did NC react to the new development?
After being snubbed by the PDP, the NC modified its stand saying they are only offering outside support to the single largest party and not joining the government in Jammu and Kashmir. "If we were interested in being part of a government, we could have aligned with the BJP as it was an option readily available to NC after the election results. But unlike PDP, we are guided by principles and a political ideology that is rooted in the aspirations and sentiments of our people", said Ali Mohammad Sagar, NC general secretary.

Sagar said NC had hoped that PDP would forge a coming together of
the two regional parties in the larger interest of the state but they recognize their compulsions due to the debt they owe to the BJP. "It would now be better for the PDP to be honest with the people rather than trying to cloak their deceit behind some smokescreen of a moral high ground", the NC General Secretary added.

Where does the NC stand in the new political scenario?
NC has received a drubbing in the recently concluded polls with party winning only 15 seats against 28 in 2008. PDP emerged as the single largest party winning 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 seats and Congress 12. The alliance should have 44 members to form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir was placed under the governor's rule on January 8 following Omar's decision to step down as the caretaker chief minister.

Is there any sign of ending the current political impasse?
PDP, which has been holding informal talks with BJP, sounded hopeful to end the political deadlock and form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir. "Efforts are on (for the government formation", said Akthar.
