A week after he was called back for consultations amid raging row between India and Pakistan over harassment of diplomats, Pakistan High Commissioner to India Sohail Mahmood has said that the government wants to sort out the issue as soon as possible.

Mahmood was called back to Islamabad for consultations after alleged incidents of "harassment" of its diplomatic staff in New Delhi with Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Muhammad Faisal claiming that the Indian government failed to take notice of the increasing incidents of intimidation of Pakistani diplomats, their families and staffers by its intelligence agencies.

"I discussed this (diplomatic row) issue with our government and we want to sort this out as soon as possible because it affects the relationship between our countries," Sohail Mahmood told ANI.

Both New Delhi and Islamabad have accused each other of harassing its diplomats.

Over the last few months, several Indian High Commission staffers have been severely harassed and intimidated and in one case an official's home was broken into and a laptop stolen

In Pakistan, the High Commissioner's car was recently stopped by agencies in the middle of a busy road to prevent him from attending an event," a source said

The strong reaction came after Pakistani news-paper Dawn quoted Pakistani officials of accusing India of harassing its diplomats and their families in the country and threatened to pull out the families if the intimidation did not stop

India has repeatedly requested Pakistan to mutually ensure that High Commissions are allowed to do their job in an atmosphere free of harassment and intimidation, that staff be allowed to work.
